William Francis Colleary, 9 November 1928 - 28 May 2020

William F. Colleary, beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather died due to complications from pneumonia resulting from COVID-19 exposure. William will be greatly missed by his children: William M. Colleary, Kathleen A. Horn, and Christine M. Colleary; his grandchildren: Michael Colleary (Kim Colleary), James Colleary (Katie Colleary), Sarah Horn, Shannon Colleary, Joshua Horn, Emily Horn, and Thomas Colleary; and his great-grandchildren: Aibhlin Colleary and Caitlin Colleary. William was pre-deceased by his wife, Phyllis McLearen Colleary (2015), sons William F. Colleary, Jr. (1954) and Daniel E. Colleary (2019), and his daughter-in-law Eileen E. Colleary (2018).

William was the second child of John E. Colleary and Marion York Colleary. He was born and raised in Flushing, New York. After high school, he joined the United States Air Force (1949-1950 period). He served at several Air Force bases participating in several training programs and eventually was assigned to a Security Squadron at Arlington Hall Station in Arlington, Virginia. He ultimately reached the rank of Staff Sergeant prior to separation from the Air Force. He remained in Federal service at the National Security Agency as a civilian employee and retired in 1986 after 35 years of Federal service.

William was a long-time Howard County resident, first residing on Kerger Road prior to moving his growing family to the family’s permanent home in the Font Hill Manor development in 1964. William was stationed twice to Colorado for work -- once during his Federal service, and the second time during his wife Phyllis' Federal service with NSA.

William was a Civil War enthusiast and enjoyed travelling the country visiting Civil War battlefields with family and friends. He also enjoyed spending time by the ocean. He derived pleasure by arranging family reunion trips to the ocean for the entire family. William’s favorite pastime was using his analytic skills to conduct genealogical research both prior to, and after, his retirement from Federal service. His efforts led to many discoveries into the Colleary and McLearen family lines, ultimately discovering and documenting the link from two branches of the family to the Allerton family of Mayflower pilgrimage. William enjoyed the challenge and the chase of this research, and he was happy to share his knowledge and expertise with others who were beginning the same journey. His research and documentation have enabled others in the family to pick up this pursuit and carry on the love of ancestral research.

He will be sorely missed by family and friends, but ultimately, he is at peace with his wife and children.

Interment with Honors will take place in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
