Obituary for Leo V. Sofianek

Print
Leo Vincent Sofianek, age 84, of Catonsville, Maryland went to be with his Lord on the 15th of November 2018.

Born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania in 1934 to the late John and Barbara (Hitcho) Sofianek, Leo was one of seven children, raised in a warm, caring home. Leo’s life was dedicated to his family, public service, the church, and volunteerism. He first served in the U.S. Army and then devoted over 35 years to the National Security Agency, protecting and defending the country that he loved. He was an innovator, a pioneer, and a true example of the best of what a leader and coworker can be. He often accomplished what others deemed impossible. Simply put, he made an impactful, positive difference, while touching the lives of those around him, at work, at home, and beyond. His peers recognized him for his “historical achievements, loyalty, dedication, and friendship.”

Leo shared his love of community by volunteering through the St. Vincent De Paul society at Beans and Bread as well as through the Knights of Columbus at Our Daily Bread and My Brother’s Keeper. He was recognized for his service by the Archdiocese of Baltimore with one of its highest honors. He was a gentle and kind soul, who in his life loved many activities like crabbing, gardening, a cold dark beer, and his family.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years Anna Gloria (George), formerly of West Hazleton, PA, his daughter Karen, her husband Richard Gorsuch, and children Jordan and Allie; as well as son Mark, his wife Inge, and children Ian and Maxwell; and his sister Marie Dean of Hazleton, PA.

His final days were spent surrounded by his loving family. Leo, a loving husband, father, grandfather – and awesome guy – left a legacy and will truly be missed. The family will be having a private burial service at Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Marriottsville, MD. A celebration of life gathering, in Leo's honor, will be held after the first of the year.
