Janet Barth

I was triply blessed to know Jim as a colleague, his wife, Janet, as a colleague and a great friend, and as the Dad of one of my son's best friends. My fondest memories of Jim are his sharp-edged sense of humor. At meetings at NASA, I always tried to sit next to him so I could overhear his pithy narrative on meeting nonsense interjected with his spot-on insight on how to solve some of the most complex problems on Hubble Space Telescope. My fondest memories of Jim are his leadership as Den Leader of the infamous Cub Scout Den 10. Jim undertook the goal of the Cubs earning their engineering badge. Their were no shortcuts with Jim being that he was an engineer of engineers. With Jim's guidance, the Cubs designed, analyzed, and built sophisticated electrical and mechanical structures. Their crowning achievement was a full sized catapult made with logs from Jim's property. I asked Jim what the Cubs were going to catapult. With a wry twinkle in his eye, Jim told me that his goal was to catapult a Cub Scout from the Jew house to the Barth house. Such a precious memory!
