Obituary for Helen Jones (Stromberg)

Helen Jones (Stromberg)
Helen Stromberg Jones died on February 27 at her home, Bowling Green Farm. She lived her life surrounded by children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren on the land she loved.
Born on a farm in Marriottsville, she walked two miles to attend the one room Alpha School House. It was there that she learned to love books, a passion that continued through her life. She attended High School at West Friendship, where she met her future husband Ridgely Jones. She excelled in her studies, and went on to Towson Normal School where she graduated first in her class in 1934.
She taught 4th grade at McDonogh School until her son John Ridgely was born. After that she was a full time farm wife, raising chickens, milking cows, and keeping the books for the farm. She loved the farm life, as she said “no two days are ever the same on the farm”. And she loved the land, and the fact that she could pass that love on to her family where the 10th generation continues to farm Bowling Green Farm.
Mrs. Jones retained her commitment to education. In the 1960’s she served on the Howard County Board of Educations Citizen’s Curriculum Commission, which examined the curriculum being offered at Howard County schools. She was co-chair of the language arts section where she advocated for smaller high school class sizes and exposure to classical literature. She was active in PTA work at West Friendship Elementary School and Howard High School, serving as President of the PTA on several occasions as her children attended various schools.
She and her husband were long active in civic affairs, advocating for policies that would retain the agricultural land base in Howard County. When Mr. Jones was nominated to the first Howard County Council in 1968 Mrs. Jones was his secretary and confidant. They were a regular fixture at County Council hearings for close to 40 years. Mrs. Jones was also a long time member of the League of Women Voters, and loved the discussion of issues at League meetings.
Mr. and Mrs. Jones were avid Ball Room dancers. It was quite common for Mr. Jones to come after finishing his work on the farm and announce that it was a good night for going dancing. They danced throughout the Baltimore and Washington area and often went to Roseland in New York.
Mrs. Jones was a dedicated volunteer of the Howard County Historical Society, where she served as President. During her Presidency, it was obvious that the society needed additional room to house their growing collections. Under Mrs. Jones’ leadership the Society acquired the Weir building, which houses the Historical Society’s library.
Mrs. Jones was appointed to the Social Services Board of Howard County where she worked to improve the nutrition provided to all county residents.
In her later years, Mrs. Jones enjoyed keeping up with the adventures of her 6 grand children and 6 great-grandchildren. She was an avid reader, and it was a challenge for the family to keep her in good books!
Mrs. Jones was predeceased by her beloved husband Ridgely Jones, her son John Ridgely Jones, her brother Joe Stromberg and her parents Harold and Jane (Moxley) Stromberg.
She is survived by her children J. Philip Jones and his wife Sharon and Ann Holmes Jones and her husband Donald Koch, and her daughter-in-law Mary Jones; her Grandchildren and spouses Timothy James and Mitzi, Thomas Ridgely and Sahar, and Philip O’Farrell and Emily Jones ; Catherine Lorena, Alexander Henry and Matthew Ridgely Koch.
